An industrial building for General Dynamics Electric Boat, housing thirteen large automated welding machines for the construction of submarine hulls and various components.

The building was to be constructed in two phases, with the first phase completed years before the second phase was scheduled to begin construction. The client directed that the final building should be a single connected structure without a movement joint, to improve waterproofing of the roof system.

To accomplish this goal, we designed a special connection at the intersection of the trusses between the current phase and future phase. Utilizing this connection, we created a connection point between the structures which not only allows for easy bolting on of the future truss members, but also saved significant steel tonnage in the final truss design for phase 2 by taking advantage of the continuity of the connected structure.

Phase 2 of the project is currently under construction, scheduled for 2021 completion.
